Any supplies brought to school by your child, with the exception of his/her personal folders, notebooks and pencil boxes, will be shared and used by all classmates. I encourage that special pencils and other special belongings be left at home. Please no markers, pens, pencil sharpeners, or fidget toys. We could always use more supplies as well. We usually run out of glue sticks, hand wipes, whiteboard markers, tissue, and copy paper throughout the year. Please feel free to donate more to our classroom if you can. You can view the supply list at https://www.ortweinelementary.com/our-supply-lists
AVID
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a school-wide philosophy that promotes college awareness and readiness through organization, note-taking, and high-quality instructional techniques. The entire AVID system will be in place in all 4th-5th grade classes and select 3rd grade classes this school year, as well as components of the philosophy throughout our school community. More information can be found at www.avid.org.
Homework
At the beginning of each month I will send home an optional monthly homework log. Please note that homework is optional and not required. If you choose to participate in homework, students will be advised to read at least 15-25 minutes every night. I will also include other optional assignments that can be completed if desired. Homework will not be graded. The purpose of homework is to provide practice and reinforcement for skills taught in school. Consideration is given to a child’s outside activities, so homework is usually not assigned on weekends or holidays and is not given as a punishment. Parents should expect that reading be a part of assigned homework each night. Parents are asked to provide a quiet, well-lit area for their children to complete homework. If students have difficulty with an assignment or part of an assignment, parents are asked to communicate with teachers regarding the issues. Families are encouraged to check homework for completeness.
Progress Reports and Report Cards
You will receive your child’s progress report once every three weeks and a final report card once each semester. These reports will includes grades for class work, tests, and participation based on the following scale:
Summative Assessments: 65% of grade
Formative Assessments: 35% of grade
90-100%=A 80-89%=B 70-79%=C 60-69%=D 59% and below =F
Parent Volunteers
Parent Volunteers are welcome any time. I would like to get my routines and rules set up in August and September. I will open time slots for volunteers once these routines have been established. Your presence in the class is very important to support the learning environment and success of the children. Volunteers can help read with the students, help prepare activities and supervise. If there is something special you would like to share, please let me know. Parents who would like to volunteer must attend a school volunteer training with administration before entering the classroom. Volunteer trainings are help approximately once a month.
Ortwein ES will comply with Regulation 4100, which requires all volunteers at schools with either unsupervised and/or regular contact with students to be fingerprinted and issued a badge from CCSD. Regular in this case is defined as four or more times per month. The tracking of “regular” volunteers will be completed by the Office and Administration. Volunteers will be expected to report to the Office prior to working in the building or visiting classrooms/students/common areas. Teachers who utilize the services of volunteers are expected to clearly communicate the duties to be performed and the scope of the volunteer’s responsibility. Siblings that are not enrolled at Ortwein are not able to be on campus with the volunteer without prior consent from the Administration.
Volunteers should:
- Sign in at the office each day that he/she is volunteering in the building.
- Follow the established schedule created by the teacher.
- Be familiar with emergency procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality.

Student's birthdays can be acknowledge by a special birthday announcement, special privileges, a birthday card from the class and other such measures, however actual birthday celebrations for students are not allowed at school during instructional time. Parents can bring commercially prepared treats during lunch for students to eat in the multipurpose room or at dismissal (this is the preferred time). If such items are delivered to school, these items will remain in the front office until lunch or dismissal. Balloons are not allowed in the lunch room or the classrooms as they can create a safety hazard and cause the fire alarm to go off. Goodies other than food are preferred due to student allergies with the exception of Popsicle. Children, love items like pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, yo-yo’s, bubbles, small bouncing balls, etc.
Suitable educational activities will be provided for specific holiday celebrations(Valentine's Day, Christmas, Halloween) Parties will not begin earlier than thirty minutes before dismissal time. If, for religious reasons, you’d prefer not to have your child participate, please let me know.
Bathroom
We will take group bathroom breaks for the first month. Students may also go anytime they need, unless I’m teaching a lesson. Please dress them in comfortable and easy to fasten clothing.
Backpacks
Please write your child’s name on their backpack and room number. If something is lost, there is a Lost and Found near the main entrance of the school. If possible write your child’s name on anything and everything they can put on and take off, like jackets, hats, etc.
Cell Phones
If your child has a cell phone and it is brought to school, it must remain in their backpack during school hours. Students who are using their cell phones during the school day will be sent to the office.
Toys
Toys from home should not be brought to school. Our room is filled with wonderful materials; I don’t want any of your special items to get broken or misplaced.
Emergency
For the safety of your child please keep information updated at all times, such as contact numbers, home address, work information, in Infinite Campus. Also, please make sure your child memorizes their phone numbers and address.
Important School Papers/Tuesday Folder
Please go through your child’s backpack every day. Read and complete all school papers, then turn it in the next day
or as soon as possible. School papers will be sent home in a Tuesday Folder. Communication between the family and school is critical. We encourage parents/guardians to communicate with their child’s teacher at any time. Regular parent-teacher conferences will be held as necessary. If a student is doing unsatisfactory work, the teacher will indicate the concerns on the child’s progress reports. A school folder, referred to as the Tuesday Folder, will be sent home each Tuesday with all school and classroom communication for the week. Please ensure you check the folder each Tuesday and sign that you have done so. Mass family phone messages and emails will also be sent periodically as reminders of important events. Please be sure we have a current telephone and/or email address on file to receive these messages. We also maintain an active website (www.ortweinelementary.com) and Facebook Page as means to communicate with families.
First Day
The first day of school may be difficult for some of our children (and parents). Please know I will do everything I can to keep them happy and safe, but please try to prepare your child by talking to them about school and the routine you will have every day. Explain that you will bring them to school, leave them with their teacher and friends to listen and learn. Tell them they need to listen, respect and be kind to their teachers and friends. Then let them know you will be back to pick them up.
Drop Off and Pick Up at School
Arrival and dismissal are busy times at school. Students will report directly to their classrooms in the morning. There will be lineup dots in the courtyard within the school gates for dismissal. Arrival and dismissal will occur from the side gate between the Front Office and the Kindergarten Playground. Kindergarten students will arrive and be dismissed from the Kindergarten playground only. In order to keep students safe, parents may not inhibit the flow of traffic by double parking, stopping on the street or drive ways of the parking lot, making U-turns, etc. There are designated “drop off lanes” in which families may not park. Visitor parking will be used by those families wishing to get out of the car and walk to drop off or pick up their child. Students may not be dropped off at school prior to 9:00 a.m. unless they are participating in a before school activity under the supervision of staff/badged volunteers or eating breakfast purchased in the Cafeteria. Parents/Contacts picking up students early/late must show their picture ID to the office staff before the student will be called to the office or released. The person must be listed as an emergency contact in order for the student to be released to them. Teachers will not release any student until they have been notified by the office. Students will not be released early or late to anyone under the age of 18 years old. It is of utmost importance to have an afterschool plan with your child to avoid confusion and late pickup. Students must be picked up no later than 3:25 p.m. There is a progressive protocol that the school will follow should a student not be picked up multiple times, up to and including transportation of the child to Child Haven. Safe Key is available before and after school for daycare. Students who are not picked up after school or arrive prior to 8:40 a.m. will be sent to SafeKey at a charge to the family.
